Many researchers have worked in the area of colon-specific drug delivery and have developed various formulations of anti-inflammatory drugs for targeted colonic release. However, microspheres of BBH have not yet been developed using a dual approach that combines colon targeting with Eudragit S-100 and sustained drug release through the use of grafted gum. This dual strategy offers the potential advantage of preventing premature drug release in the upper gastrointestinal tract while providing prolonged therapeutic action in the colon.
Problem statement
Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) is increasing day by day, and currently there is no permanent cure available in India. Most of the formulations available in the market are in the form of tablets, capsules, and other conventional dosage forms. These formulations release the drug in the upper gastrointestinal tract, where the drug may either degrade due to acidic pH or undergo extensive metabolism before reaching the colon. As a result, insufficient drug reaches the target site, leading to reduced therapeutic efficacy. Moreover, commonly used allopathic drugs for IBD are associated with several side effects, especially during long-term therapy. Many of the existing formulations also release the drug at a faster rate, which necessitates frequent dosing. This increases the pill burden on patients and may reduce patient compliance.
